A$AP Rocky has already conquered both the music and fashion industry. And now he is ready to take over the film industry as well. The rap star is one of the characters in Spike Lee’s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest.
A$AP Rocky & Denzel Star in Trailer For New Spike Lee Film
On May 5, the first official trailer for the film dropped. And despite the film being produced by Lee, one of the most revered directors in the industry, fans on social media had mixed reactions.
“This does look good but I’ve learned to be skeptical because of the last time Spike Lee tried to remake a beloved classic East Asian film,” one fan said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Oh come on! Spike, Denzel, and James Brown happy Monday!!!” another user added.
“A24 and Spike Lee go well together,” another user added.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 22 and then will stream on Apple TV Plus beginning on September 5.
A$AP’s role in the upcoming flick is a testament to the power of social media. In a recent interview, Lee noted that he was scrolling Instagram a few years back and saw people saying that Rocky looked like he could be Denzel Washington’s son. So when he tapped Denzel for his role in the upcoming film reaching out to Rocky was a no-brainer.
“What’s funny is I was looking at some Instagram [post] four or five years ago,” he expressed.
“And people were saying that A$AP looked like he’s Denzel’s son. And in the film, we used that. [….] A$AP, man. Fire. I mean, there are some scenes with him and D head to head, he ain’t backing up. It’s like, ‘I’m here, too!’ Very, very happy with the way the film turned out and looking forward to sharing with the world.”
Washington and Lee have connected on several other Hollywood classics such as He Got Game and Mo Better Blues.
