Doechii is still buzzing after performing with her hero, Ms. Lauryn Hill, during a headlining set in Miami this weekend.
The Swamp Princess sang Ms. Hill’s praises as she gushed about the experience afterwards on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Thank you Miss Lauryn Hill. Thank you,” she captioned a video of the performance. “My heart is so full. She is my hero. This is the greatest honor hip hop could give me. Praise God … my entire body is vibrating with joy right now. I’ll never forget this day! EVER!”
On Saturday (March 29), the “Anxiety” musician, joined Lauryn Hill onstage at the Jazz in the Gardens music festival to perform the latter’s 1998 hit “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
“I want to introduce y’all to another sister,” the “Ex-Factor” artist told the crowd before Doechii arrived on the stage, rapping and dancing alongside Hill.
Doechii Credits Ms. Hill, Miseducation for Musical Success
Doechii reflected on the experience in a lengthy post on Instagram on Sunday, revealing that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was the first full-length album she listened to. “My mom would play it from top to bottom everyday on my way to school for years,” she said. “I would sing your songs as if I wrote them, imagining myself on stage. Each song deepened my love for music and my curiosity to write raps. My favorite lyric in Doo Wop is ‘don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem’ that stuck with me anytime I wanted to ‘get even’ or harden my heart towards those who wronged me. I carried your principles with me during my coming of age. And I carry them with me now at this current stage of my career, your lyrics are close to my heart.”
It’s proving to be a rather solid start to the year for Doechii, and it’s likely just the beginning.
