Eminem’s Term “Stan” Makes It Into The Oxford Dictionary

Eminem’s 2000 song “Stan” hit so hard that it not only became a slang term for an over the top fan over the years but the term is also now in the Oxford Dictionary. The dictionary defines the term “Stan” as an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity. The term Stan is a noun/verb that looks like it will be in the English vocabulary for years to come.

The example the dictionary uses for stan as a noun is; ‘he has millions of stans who are obsessed with him and call him a rap god’.

The example the dictionary uses for stan as a verb; ‘y’all know I stan for Katy Perry, so I was excited to see the artwork for her upcoming album’.

The origin of the word is sited as such; Early 21st century: probably with allusion to the 2000 song “Stan” by the American rapper Eminem, about an obsessed fan.
