The rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar appeared to hit a standstill after the rap artist declared “game over” after his Super Bowl halftime show performance in February. But the petty wars and mind games continue between the two artists.
Kendrick kicked off his Grand National tour with SZA this past weekend. He kicked off the tour in Minneapolis. During the show, he took a subtle jab at Drizzy with a courtroom skit — appearing to mock Drake’s current lawsuit against the Universal Music Group label over the distribution of Kendrick’s Not Like Us.
Kendrick Shades Drake During Grand National Tour
Before performing the song that Drake believes defames his character, Kendrick opens with a skit that places him in a courtroom deposition. The Compton-born artist starts off by referencing the date of his Super Bowl Performance, February 9, which Drake added to his recently amended lawsuit against the record label.
“I don’t keep up with dates,” Kendrick responds.
Lamar also references one of Drake’s diss tracks “Family Matters,” where he urges Kendrick to drop a response to him.
“Does this ring a bell? Drop, drop, drop, drop,” the attorney asks in the skit.
In their defense against Drake, UMG has suggested that the Canadian star’s litigation is just a case of him being a sore loser. However, Drake’s lawyer, Michael Gottlieb says that Universal is not being completely honest in their defense. He says that UMG is pretending that the lawsuit is over Not Like Us. He says that the root of the issue is much more serious.
“UMG wants to pretend that this is about a rap battle. In order to distract its shareholders, artists, and the public from a simple truth. A greedy company is finally being held responsible for profiting from dangerous misinformation that has already resulted in multiple acts of violence,” he wrote in the statement.
“This motion is a desperate ploy by UMG to avoid accountability, but we have every confidence that this case will proceed and continue to uncover UMG’s long history of endangering and abusing its artists.”
