Nas entered the rap game at an interesting time. His debut album, Illmatic, dropped during the height of the rap beef between the East Coast and the West Coast.
In a period where the rap game was all about death and destruction, the Queensbrodge product brought a breath of fresh air to the genre. His lyricism and ability to paint pictures through his storytelling were truly a welcomed work of art. Songs such as One Love, The World is Yours, and One Time of Your Mind, have contributed to Illmatic being regarded as one of the greatest Albums of all time.
Nas was 21 years old when Illmatic dropped. The rap star said that his creative process started way before that. He revealed that he began writing the album when he was about 9 years old.
“I realized, writing the first album, you’ve been writing it all your life until that point, I’m sure you’ve heard that before,” Nas said. “So I’d been writing it since I was 9 years old, in a way. But when I narrowed it down to what would be album material, it probably started at 16 years old. I got a record deal at 18 and then finished the record at 20.”
