Four Iconic Hip Hop Songs That Flipped Unexpected Samples

Videos by According2HipHop

As music fans, we can all appreciate originality. But when an artist can flip a sample and make it their own, it creates a special type of magic. Here are four times artists wowed us with their samples.

Megan Thee Stallion – Girls in The Hood

When Megan Thee Stallion burst onto the scene with her smash hit “Big Ole Freak” she was kind of viewed as the girl next door. Her provocative lyrics and sex appeal made her one of the more desirable artists. But following her 2020 shooting incident with Tory Lanez, Meg became more of a cut-throat. Determined to prove that women rappers can be just as gritty and grimy as male artists. Megan’s 2020 hit “Girls in the Hood” is a testament to that. She samples Eazy E and NWA’s 1987 hit Boyz in The Hood to drive her point across.

F**k bein’ good, I’m a bad b***h. I’m sick of mo**********s tryna tell me how to live. Wack h**s hate under my pictures on the ‘Gram. B***h, you better hope I never run across your man,” she raps in the song.

Jay-Z & Kanye West – Otis

Jay-Z and Ye, formerly known as Kanye West have fallen out. But at one point they were one of the hottest music duos out — possibly one of the best ever. Their 2011 collab album Watch The Throne best in their discography. Watch the Throne didn’t just represent an album. It was almost a culture shift. On the album, Jay and Kanye tap Otis Redding for their 2008 hit, “Otis” The song is derived from Redding’s 1966 studio album, Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul. However, the original version of Otis Redding’s version by more than decades, originating with a 1932 recording by the Ray Noble Orchestra.

Tory Lanez – Proud Family

Tory Lanez has become one of the more controversial figures in music. But once upon a time, before his 2020 incident with Megan, The Stallion, he was one of the top music stars in the game. And one thing he was known for was being a wizard with Sample selection. Lanez stamped that on his 2018 Chixtape EP. One of the tracks Proud Family samples the theme song from the 2000s Disney Channel children’s program. However, Lanez flips the theme song, originally performed by Destiny’s Child, to a less child-friendly version. “F*****g you make me proud of me because I know that you doubted me,” he sings.

Kanye West & Jamie Foxx – Gold Digger

Before he made the change to “Ye” Kanye West produced a trail of classic hits on his rise to stardom in the 2000s. One of those hits was his timeless classic Gold Digger off his 2005, Late Registration album. West samples music icon Ray Charles’ 1958 song I’ve Got a Woman. The initial hook reads “She gives me money when I’m in need. She gives me money when I’m in need. Yeah, she’s a kind of friend indeed.”However West flips the sample as Jamie Foxx sings “She takes my money when I’m in need. Yeah, she’s a trifling friend indeed. Oh, she’s a gold digger. Way over town that Diggs on me.” Ironically Foxx plays the music icon in his 2004 biopic, Ray.
