Boxing is proving to no longer be a young man’s sport. At least after the latest bombshell announcement. Boxing legends Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather are set to square off in the squared circle.
Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson Set to Duel in Exhibition Match
A date, time, and venue have yet to be determined. But the two fighters did agree to the bout. It will be an exhibition match, so win, lose, or draw, it won’t affect either of their professional records.
In a statement, Tyson admitted he didn’t think the fight would happen. But he is happy that he and Mayweather were able to agree.
“When CSI came to me about stepping in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, I thought, ‘No way this happens,’ but Floyd said yes,” Tyson said. “This fight is something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen. However, boxing has entered a new era of the unpredictable — and this fight is as unpredictable as it gets.
This will be Tyson’s first fight since last November, when he faced social media star Jake Paul in an exhibition fight on Netflix. Tyson lost that match decisively. At times, the 59-year-old looks completely unmatched, barely able to move or come close to affecting the 27-year-old Paul. But he appears to be a lot more confident about fighting 48-year-old Mayweather.
“I still can’t believe Floyd wants to really do this,” he added. “It’s going to be detrimental to his health. But he wants to do it, so it’s signed and it’s happening!”
Floyd, on the other hand, has other plans for his bout with Tyson.
“I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and there hasn’t been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy,” Mayweather said in a release. “You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big and it’s going to be legendary. I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”
