Rap star J. Cole is officially back in album mode.
The rap star’s seventh studio album is one of the most anticipated projects of 2026. So when he dropped one of the tracks from the upcoming album, titled Disc 2 Track 2, it sent the internet into a frenzy.
Fans Think J.Cole Targeted Jay-Z on New Track
But of course, internet detectives did some digging. And many fans believe that Cole sent some bars to Jay-Z on the song.
“On cloud nine, now signed to my hero. One of the so-called kings of this rap thing that I swear to usurp. A decade later, Momma cut the cable. My motivation to be greater ends the moment I peer into her purse,” Cole raps on the song.
At the start of his career, Cole was signed to Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation. Which is why many perceived the lyrics to be about him. Particularly because of the part where he mentions “so-called kings.”
“I heard that too. Maybe Cole is mad about the master’s deal with him, and Jay did,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I could imagine when somebody you looked up to tends to be maybe nothing like the person you expected, it can be a distasteful feeling,” another user added.
“This boy bout to make the king come out and address the people!” a third user chimed in.

This is not the first time that Cole has named-dropped Jay-Z on a track. In fact, he has been rather transparent about their somewhat complicated relationship throughout his career. On his 2013 track Villuminati, Cole addressed Jay-Z initially passing on signing him to Roc Nation, which left a bad taste in his mouth.
“Tryna get Hov to f**k with me. I had a burned CD full of jams that was in my hand. When he said he didn’t want it, it was f**k him again.
One day, he gon’ regret playing me. Little did I know in a year he’d be fu***ng paying me, what could you say to me?” he raps on the song.
It will be interesting to see if Jay-Z responds.
