The music industry is still mourning the untimely death of neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo. The creator of timeless hits such as Brown Sugar and Lady passed away on October 14 after a private battle with cancer.
Questlove Teases Soulquarians Reunion
In the wake of D’Angelo’s passing, Questlove, one of his closest industry cohorts, recently revealed that his former group, The Soulquarians, plans on getting back together.
“James [Poyser], myself, Bilal—the fragments that are left of the Soulquarians…we spoke,” he said via Okayplayer. “The family’s going to get back together.”
In a November 2025 interview, Questlove also said that D’Angelo could have new music on the way.
“You’ll see soon. With him, it’s always the sound of yesterday, but for the future. And this record is no different. So when it comes out, you’ll know,” Quest Love said during a red carpet interview with The National News Network at the 303 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The Soulquarians were a 1990s music group composed of some of the top neo-soul and hip-hop talents at the time. Some of the group members included Questlove, D’Angelo, J Dilla, and James Poyser. With other top talents such as Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), Talib Kweli, Bilal, Q-Tip, Roy Hargrove, and Pino Palladino being contributing members as well.
The group produced some of the most timeless musical works. Including: The Roots’ 1999 album, Things Fall Apart, Most Def’s Black on Both Sides, and D’Angelo’s Voodoo album.
However, a 2000 VIBE article that painted Questlove as the leader of the group created friction within the collective. That, combined with the commercial pressure from record labels regarding their trademark sound, eventually led to the group splitting up.
