It has long been rumored that J. Cole and Diddy got involved in a scuffle back in 2013. After a “heated argument” during a VMAs after-party. During his recent appearance on Cam’ron’s Talk With Flee podcast, Cole finally addressed those rumors.

J. Cole Confirms He Fought Diddy at the 2013 VMAs Party

During the interview, Cole confirmed that the rumor is true. As for why he chose to stay mum about it all this time? Cole says he was going to tell the story once things had cooled between them. But that’s when all the stories began to come out about Puff. And Cole did not want to add fuel to the fire.

“I was gonna put it out because me & Puff were cool, we were in a good spot, but when everything happened, I’m like, nah, I don’t wanna give the world more ammo,” he said in the clip.

Several people witnessed the scuffle. Including Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) president, Terrence “Punch” Henderson. During a 2022 episode of Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast, Punch explained what happened. And he says the catalyst for their brawl was Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Jay Electronica’s record, Control. The song where Lamar infamously refers to himself as the “King of New York.”

“[Jay-Z] and Puff are doing the dinner that they usually do. This whole thing was packed like 70-30 celebrities,” Punch said at the time (via Complex). “Puff and Cole were talking about the verse, and they ended up getting into a little back and forth. When we came in, Cole and Kendrick were talking about…the verse. Puff came back over, and the argument sparked up again. So from there they ended up getting in the whole scuffle in the club.”

In 2025, Diddy was convicted of interstate prostitution and sentenced to 50 months in prison. His scheduled release date is April 2028.
