The Hip-Hop community is mourning the loss of Danny Simmons, the acclaimed artist, poet, philanthropist, and older brother of Russell Simmons and Run-D.M.C.’s Rev Run. His passing was confirmed by family members this week, though a cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
The Def Jam founder announced the news with an emotional tribute, describing his oldest brother as both his best friend and the family’s true artist.
“He was the true artist in the family,” Simmons wrote. “His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits.”
The family later released a statement celebrating Danny’s life, calling him “a beacon of love and creativity” whose influence extended far beyond his immediate family.
Danny Simmons built a legacy of his own in the art world, becoming a respected abstract expressionist painter, mentor, and advocate for creatives nationwide.
Beyond his acclaimed visual art career, he played a significant role in Hip-Hop culture through his involvement in the creation of Def Poetry Jam. The spoken-word platform helped elevate a generation of poets before becoming the award-winning HBO series that brought slam poetry into mainstream culture.
Though he often stayed outside the spotlight occupied by his famous siblings, Danny Simmons leaves behind a lasting imprint on both the art world and Hip-Hop culture. His commitment to creativity, mentorship, and community empowerment will continue to inspire generations of artists to come.
