Very sad day for Hip-Hop fans that were just getting into the Netflix series “The Get Down”. After one full season Netflix has cancelled the critically acclaimed Hip-Hop series “The Get Down”. The first part of season one, premiered last year drawing 3.2 million total U.S. adults 18-49 in its first 31 days, according to Symphony Advanced Media. The numbers from the second half of season one didn’t match the first half.
The Get Down’s budget was also a major issue. The Netflix series cost $120 million to produce ($7.5 million per episode) which made it the most expensive Netflix original series ever as well as one of the most expensive Hollywood series ever.
As Variety reported last year production on The Get Down was stopped and started so many times that some writers on the series began to jokingly call it “The Shut Down.” The show’s director Baz Luhrmann told Variety “I really believed that I was sort of going to be an uncle to the project. The mechanism that pre-existed to create TV shows didn’t really work for this show. At every step of the way there was no precedent for what we were doing. The standard process really didn’t work, so progressively, I was drawn more and more into the center of it.”
Well, The Get Down was great while it last. Hopefully many people learned something about Hip-Hop’s origins.
