The Atlanta city council voted unanimously, 15-0, to pass the measure, which amends the local law so that possession of up to one ounce of marijuana is punishable by a $75 fine and no more. Current law carries a penalty of up to $1,000 and up to six months jail time for possession of less than one ounce. The new provision removes that criteria, which will have an incredible impact. Especially for Black Atlanta citizens who are disproportionately affected by the previous rule.
