Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz are putting their stamp on a powerful new documentary.
The Grammy-winning duo have signed on as executive producers for Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story, a film celebrating the life and legacy of legendary photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite.
The documentary is already making major noise on the festival circuit—selling out at the BFI London Film Festival, where it took home the Audience Award for Best British Discovery, before heading stateside to DOC NYC. It also just secured Best Documentary Feature at the Pan African Film Festival.
Directed by Yemi Bamiro, the film dives into Brathwaite’s groundbreaking work behind the “Black Is Beautiful” movement—capturing the culture from Harlem in the 1950s all the way through his decades-long career.
From everyday Black beauty to iconic moments with legends like Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, and the The Jackson 5, Brathwaite’s lens documented over six decades of Black culture, fashion, music, and activism.
