December has been a month of highs and lows for boxing star Anthony Joshua. Just a couple of weeks ago, he secured one of the biggest paydays of his career after defeating social media star Jake Paul. And not even a month later, his life was in danger after a fatal car crash.
Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Car Crash
According to ESPN, the boxing star was visiting Nigeria over the weekend when he was involved in a car crash. And while the former boxing champ sustained only minor injuries, the crash did claim the lives of two other people.
“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” a statement from Ogun State Police Command read (Via ESPN). “He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries, and is receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”
In a statement to the outlet, Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo said that the cause of the accident was a burst tire. After the tire on the vehicle burst, the driver lost control and eventually crashed into a truck that was parked on the side of the road.
“The accident happened as a result of a burst tire on AJ’s vehicle. Which caused the driver to lose control. And the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road,” Ogunlowo said. “For now, I’m aware of two fatalities, and Joshua himself has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.”
A video of the aftermath of the accident also began to circulate on social media on Monday (December 29). In the clip, the boxing star can be seen grimacing in pain. The extent of his injuries is still unknown, but again, they are said to be minor.
