The Roc-A-Fella era forever changed Hip Hop and helped New York overtake Los Angeles as the genre’s commercial king in the mid and late 90s. It appears co-founder Dame Dash has hundreds of hours of archival footage from that time, but according to an award-winning director, we may never see it.
Will There Be A Roc-A-Fella Documentary?
The revelation came to light after prominent culture journalist Andre Gee posted an article for his newsletter on Substack about Dame Dash’s fall from grace. Dash, who once served as CEO of the iconic Roc-A-Fella Records, has recently become known more as a punchline rather than a pioneer. His longstanding feuds with Cam’ron and JAY-Z, along with popping up on any YouTube show that will talk to him, have curbed many people’s opinions of a man who once served as an inspiration.
In his newsletter, Gee highlights these incidents and his growing sadness over the state of Dash, and his insistence to continue to bash his former friend JAY-Z, making a point about Dash’s clear masking and posturing over the painful fallout. The story resonated with many, especially those who’ve been around Dash. One of such, award-winning director Adam Bhala Lough, known for the Lil Wayne documentary The Carter, reacted to Gee’s post, revealing new information about Dash.
“True story: Dame asked me to direct the official Roc-A-Fella documentary,” he wrote. “He’s sitting on 100s of hours of incredible footage from that era. I said I’d only do it if I got Jay-Z’s side of the story too. Dame refused. I declined. I’d still be open to it if he ever changes his mind.”
A documentary is still possible, though it seems it would try to cut JAY-Z completely out of the picture, which would omit too much of the story to be credible. Dash has not commented on the story as of this writing.

What’s The Latest With Dash?
Dash has continued his hate tour against JAY-Z. Recently, he called JAY out for having his wife Beyonce cut his hair, and “flexing” her.
He also criticized JAY-Z for bringing out Nas, his former rival, for his Yankee Stadium shows, calling it “weird.”
Fans turned heads when Dash also asserted that JAY-Z was not on Kanye West’s level, showering praise on the Chicago rapper.
The feud between Dash and HOV stems from many things, including rumors of mismanagement, people getting too enamored with fame, differing visions for the record label, and fights over women. But mainly, it’s because at the height of Roc-A-Fella’s powers, JAY left the label to become president of Island Def Jam. A final dispute where JAY offered to allow Dash to retain the Roc-A-Fella name in exchange for full ownership of his masters for Reasonable Doubt left the duo seemingly permanently severed.
