The death of rap artist Nipsey Hussle in 2019 left a lasting impact on many members of the hip-hop community. Among those impacted was Detroit-born artist Big Sean.
Big Sean Talks The Mental Impact of Nipsey’s Death
During a recent interview with Linsey Davis of ABC News, the rap artist got candid about the impact that Nipsey’s passing had on his mental health.
“I had to rediscover myself,” he said. “Didn’t even know what I liked anymore. I didn’t even know what I was into anymore. I had been so caught up in the work that I lost touch with the person that I was. So, I think that led to a very deep battle of depression, deeper than I experienced when I was a teenager.”
Nipsey was tragically shot and killed in 2019. To make matters even worse, the killing took place right in front of his Marathon Clothing store in his hometown of Compton, California, in March 2019.
Big Sean says that the rapper’s tragic passing forced him to temporarily step away from making music. But he says taking that hiatus was an important step in rediscovering himself.
“[It] taught me how important the mind, body, and spirit are, how interconnected they are. Really learned how to take care of myself. My diet, being in the gym, taking time to meditate, taking time to have fun,” he continued. “You’ve got to be serious about having fun. Because as fast as time goes, we’re here for a limited amount of time. We got all these goals, all these dreams, but what if this is our only time to actually experience this friction and experience these feelings while we’re in our bodies… There are so many lessons in that time that I learned in my life; so I’m just happy to be here.”
A man named Eric Holder was found guilty of first-degree murder in the case of Nipsey Hussle in 2022. He is currently serving a 60-year prison sentence and will likely not be eligible for parole.
