Black Thought is gearing up for his annual Roots Picnic festival but found time to tease his next project. In an interview with Vibe, Thought says the long-awaited Streams Of Thought Vol.4 is on the way.
What Is Going On With Streams Of Thought Vol. 4?
The critically-acclaimed series hasn’t received a new installment since 2020, with Thought’s last project, Glorious Game, releasing in 2023. He explained to Vibe that the album, first teased back in 2023, should come out later this year.
“I feel like I still have so much to say and to do,” Thought said. “But in terms of just speaking to a desire to show a more vulnerable side as an artist and to show more personal depth to my writing, I think I’ll reach that on Streams of Thought, Vol. 4. In terms of just balancing the personal with the socio-political commentary, I think I hit a stride in that. The lyrics were timely in a way when I recorded them, that they had somehow become more timely now.”
Originally, Thought teased the album in conversation with the Fader’s Timmotep Aku for the Fader Interview Podcast. He told the Fader the album would feature production from Michigan producer 14KT, known for work with Skyzoo, eLZhi, Danny Brown, and Jay Electronica. He also said the album would feature contributions from Yasiin Bey, Rick Ross, Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y, JID, Redman, and more.
Talking to Vibe, he didn’t mention all these names, but confirmed songs with Redman, JID, Saba, Tobe Nwigwe and Big K.R.I.T.

Black Thought told VIBE: "I can’t wait for fans to hear this JID joint … We got a dope record—me, JID, and Saba … I think it’s always cool for folks to find out, 'Oh damn, I didn’t even know these cats had that sort of rapport,'… pic.twitter.com/J3Y6qIbnOi
Did Black Thought Tease Anything Else?
The legendary rapper slyly teased that The Roots had finished their next album, their first since 2014’s …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. The album, reportedly titled End Game, has been discussed since 2016 but seemed to take a pause during the pandemic. However last summer (August 22), Questlove told The Score podcast that Syd and Benny The Butcher would have features on the album.
Black Thought didn’t reveal much about the album, but did confirm it’s still happening.
“We’re pretty much done,” Thought said. “Hopefully it’s coming out sooner (rather) than later.” I mean, it could. It should.”
For now, Black Thought and The Roots will focus on their annual Roots Picnic coming back this summer to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The two-day festival is set to feature Brandy, Wale, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, JAY-Z, The Roots, and more.
