The 2024 Grammy Awards nominations have been unveiled, and Black Thought’s “Love Letter To Hip-Hop” has secured a spot in the prestigious “Best Rap Song” category.
Debuting on BET Networks in February with a video directed by Benny Boom, the single gained further momentum when BET released the audio to streaming platforms in September. Crafted in celebration of Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary, the song pays homage to legendary figures such as Run-DMC, Sylvia Robinson, MC Sha Rock, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Jay-Z, Eric B & Rakim, and DJ Kool Herc. The competition in the “Best Rap Song” category is formidable, featuring Drake & 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex,” Ko Leray’s “Players,” Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Hillbillies,” Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World,” and Killer Mike and Andre 3000’s “Scientists & Engineers.”
This nomination adds to Black Thought’s already impressive Grammy track record, which includes wins for “You Got Me,” “Hang On in There,” and “Wake Up!” with The Roots, as well as his contributions to the Hamilton soundtrack.
In addition to his Grammy pursuits, Black Thought is set to release his memoir, “The Upcycled Self,” on November 14th. The book delves into the four pivotal relationships that have shaped him: community, art, friends, and family. Through vivid vignettes, the memoir explores the themes of love, discovery, trauma, and loss. The narrative kicks off with a childhood tragedy when Trotter accidentally burned down his family’s home, and the subsequent years are a testament to a life reclaimed from the flames and forged in the crucible of adversity.
