The Hip-Hop and neo-soul community is mourning the loss of legendary recording engineer Bob Power, a pivotal figure behind the sound of the Native Tongues movement and the Soulquarians collective.
Power’s fingerprints are all over some of the most important albums in Hip-Hop and R&B history. He fully mixed The Low End Theory and Buhloone Mindstate by De La Soul, as well as Brown Sugar by D’Angelo. His work also extended to mixing tracks on De La Soul Is Dead, Baduizm by Erykah Badu, and Like Water for Chocolate by Common, among many others.
His ability to blend warmth, clarity, and soul helped define an era of music that pushed Hip-Hop and R&B into more experimental and musically rich territory.
Paying tribute, DJ Premier wrote on social media:
