J.Cole is back in that mode! The rap star dropped off a new mixtape on Tuesday (January 28). The mixtape, titled Birthday Blizzard 2026, is hosted by DJ Clue and features four new freestyles. Less than 24 hours after its release, Cole seems to have restored the feeling in hip-hop.
Charlamagne Calls Out J.Cole Over JID Comments
Despite the new project only being a four-pack, the rap artist addressed a lot on his latest mixtape. One of the coolest things that he did was salute rap artist JID, who is signed to his Dreamville record label.
On the song “99 Freestyle,” Cole says that if real hip-hop is back, JID’s next album should attain platinum certification.
“If hip-hop is back, JID should chart platinum / Anything less than that, it means y’all cappin,” he raps on the new song.
However, during Wednesday’s airing of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, the radio personality said that Cole’s comments were hypocritical. The reason? As the owner of Dreamville, the label to which JID is signed, it is Cole’s responsibility to ensure that JID is marketed correctly.
“It is interesting to hear the owner of a label talk like that when it comes to marketing and promotion; he can help with that,” he said. “J. Cole could’ve done more appearances with JID. He could’ve put his arm around JID a lot more, probably done some more records with him. There are ways J. Cole could’ve used his light and his stardom to amplify God Does Like Ugly.”

Cole says “If hiphop is back, JID should chart platinum” and Charlamagne points out it’s an interesting bar coming from the label owner, since Cole could directly help amplify JID’s success.

JID’s fourth studio album, God Does Like Ugly, was released in August 2025. It reached a peak of number 11 on the Billboard Hot 200. It is also a Grammy Award nominee for Best Rap Album of the year.
