In November, newly appointed NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the criminal legal system and public safety transition committees for New York City. The appointment has drawn both support from criminal justice reform advocates and criticism from law enforcement groups. One of the people who has been appointed to the committee is rapper and activist Mysonne.
Charlemagne Gives Mamdani, Mysonne Critics ‘Donkey of the Day’
However, the appointment has drawn criticism from several people. And radio host, Charlemagne the God, was quick to call them out. Charlamagne gave Mysonne and Mamdani’s critics Donkey of the Day on Tuesday (December 9).
Charlamagne specifically pointed out an article from the New York Post. One that describes Mysonne as an “ex-con rapper who served 7 years for armed robbery.”
Charlemagne pointed out the fact that the robbery happened more than two decades ago, and he served time for it. And even more importantly, it has nothing to do with his appointment to Mamdani’s staff.
“Number one, Mysonne was convicted in 1999. He was like 19 or 20, maybe 21. He was sentenced to seven to fourteen years and came home on parole in 2006,” the radio host said.
Charlamagne also noted that Mysonne is a pristine example of prison reform. Because he had been a “model citizen” since he came home from prison in 2006.
“He’s been a model citizen ever since,” he continued. “He spent years volunteering as a violence interruptor. He has an organization called Raising Kings, a nonprofit group that teaches classes to the inmates. At Rikers Island.”
Charlamagne concluded that Mysonne was an excellent choice for the position because he is a “true public servant,” and thus won’t have any kind of hidden agendas that play into politics.
“If you ask me, you know why [he is an] excellent choice? Because [He is a] true public servant,” he said. “Okay, who doesn’t give a damn about politics. [He actually does] the thankless work of activism. And we all know activism comes with great risk for very little reward.”
