Childish Gambino delivered one of the most emotional moments of Camp Flog Gnaw when he opened up about a serious health scare that changed his life. The multi-hyphenate artist revealed that he suffered a stroke during his last tour — an event that ultimately forced him to cancel the remaining dates.
Gambino recalled the moment it happened, describing a sudden and severe pain that hit him during a show in Louisiana. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway,” he shared. “I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
In his signature blend of honesty and humor, he joked, “The first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx.’ That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’”
The stroke was just one piece of a string of medical challenges he faced. “I broke my foot… They found a hole in my heart… so I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery,” he revealed, outlining the health battles he’s kept private until now.
Reflecting on his journey, Gambino shared a powerful takeaway: “They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one… You should be living your life how you want. If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
The revelation adds a deeper layer to his return to the stage, reminding fans just how close they came to losing one of this generation’s most creative forces — and how grateful he is for a second chance.
