China Walker, one-half of the rap duo Cam & China, has passed away after a quiet yet courageous two-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer
Her identical twin sister, Cam Walker, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram on July 2, alongside a photo of her holding China’s hand
“Tonight, [China] transitioned and is now resting peacefully. Give me time to grieve in peace, but know she loved all our supporters.”
The message ended with a simple but heavy reminder: “Check on yo people. You never know what they are going thru until it’s too late.”
China’s passing marks a painful loss for the West Coast hip-hop scene, where she and Cam had steadily carved out a lane with undeniable talent, raw chemistry, and razor-sharp lyricism.
After releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2016, they quickly built momentum off a run of viral freestyles and uncompromising verses that caught the attention of rap fans and industry veterans alike. Their reputation for penning hard-hitting bars and delivering polished, authentic performances only grew, culminating in buzzed-about appearances on On The Radar, and coverage in Rolling Stone.
In a 2023 interview, China reflected on the duo’s journey and their commitment to the craft: “We work very hard at what we do. We’re very critical. We take rap serious,” she said. “We’re very critical when it comes to hip-hop, rap, and just being creative, flow. So, seeing that, and getting my recognition for being authentic and talented, for rapping, is all that I care about.”
And it showed. Cam & China Walker made the kind of rap that didn’t need gimmicks—just cold flows, sharp writing, and twin intuition. Their partnership was more than a duo; it was a sisterhood shaped by both grit and grace, and China’s voice within it was magnetic: cool, confident, and controlled.
In an industry that still struggles to make space for women—especially Black women—in the rap conversation, China didn’t wait for permission. She earned her stripes, and then some.
Her death leaves a void, not only for Cam, but for every fan who found something real in their records. China Walker’s voice—fierce, focused, and fully her own—will continue to echo beyond the beats.
Rest easy, China.
