Clipse Shock Drops New Song With Kendrick Lamar
Ahead of the midnight album release, the rap duo blessed fans with a sneak peek of what was to come on the new project. They released one of the songs from the upcoming album. The song titled, Whips & Chains, features Grammy-award winner, Kendrick Lamar and was released exclusively on Apple Music a day before the album’s release.

When discussing how the collaboration with Kendrick came to be, Pusha T said that doing a song together was a no-brainer for both sides.
“Clipse and Kendrick together, that speaks lyricism. I don’t think anyone wants anything other than that,” Pusha said.
“We let his folks hear the album. He called them and was like ‘Listen, you need to get on this’. At this particular time, he was super busy. He sent them songs over. He called back laughing ‘Okay, I gotta do it, don’t worry about it, I wanna do two.’ The idea of right place, right time makes everything happen.”
However, although the collaboration was something both sides wanted to do, the process was far from seamless. In an interview with GQ, Pusha T revealed the reason behind Clipse’s departure from Def Jam was a dispute over Kendrick’s verse.
“They wanted me to ask Kendrick to censor his verse, which of course I was never doing,” he said. “And then they wanted me to take the record off. And so, after a month of not doing it, Steve Gawley, the lawyer over there was like, ‘We’ll just drop the Clipse.’ But that can’t work because I’m still there [solo]. But [if] you let us all go …”
