Rapper Dee-1 is claiming that behind-the-scenes efforts from concerned voices—including his own—helped lead to the cancellation of the Atlanta Hawks’ controversial “Magic City” themed night.
In a video posted to Instagram, Dee-1 revealed that he and others reached out to influential figures to voice their concerns about the promotion, which was intended to celebrate the famous Atlanta strip club during an NBA game. The event was ultimately canceled after backlash from fans, partners, and members of the league community.
“WE MADE SOME PHONE CALLS TO PEOPLE IN HIGH PLACES AND IT WORKED!” Dee-1 wrote in the caption of his post.
The New Orleans rapper explained that the decision to speak out was motivated by concerns about the NBA’s family-friendly environment, particularly with children in attendance at games.
“THE STRIP CLUB THEMED NIGHT AT AN NBA GAME WITH KIDS IS CANCELLED,” he added, calling the outcome a collective effort.
According to Dee-1, he was initially told that getting the promotion canceled would be difficult, but persistent outreach from multiple people helped shift the situation.
“I was made aware that boocoo people had been calling,” he wrote. “Shoutout to all who spoke up.”
Dee-1 also used the moment to highlight what he described as the power of consumer activism and Hip-Hop’s influence in shaping public conversations.
“CONSUMER ACTIVISM IS REAL! HIP HOP HAS REAL POWER TO MOVE THE NEEDLE HOWEVER WE WANNA MOVE IT! A SHIFT IS HAPPENING,” he wrote.
The Hawks’ “Magic City” themed night had sparked debate across social media and within the sports world, with critics arguing that celebrating a strip club during an NBA game could send the wrong message, while others viewed it as a reflection of Atlanta’s local culture.
