Jordan Peele & Keegan-Michael Key haven’t collaborated together since 2022, and comedienne Akilah Hughes appears to have a theory why. On her YouTube channel, AkilahObviously, the podcast host told the audience why she’s been inactive recently and attributed it to a TV deal she claims she had with someone who may (or may not) be Keegan-Michael Key.
What Did Hughes Allege Regarding Michael-Key?
In the video, Hughes details how someone she doesn’t name, but says they’re the less famous part of a duo that she codenames “banana and lock,” became an executive producer on a sketch comedy show she had developed. Hughes claims the show was picked up by a network that “their main character is vermin, and if they were at a theme park, you’d be excited to see him.” Disney’s mascot is Mickey Mouse.
But, she was in for a twist. Her agent called her, letting her know there was a new executive producer on the show…Key’s wife. The agent also told her people around the industry allegedly were not fans of his wife.
Hughes went ahead with the deal when she allegedly got a call from the wife of the person she codenames banana. Jordan Peele is married to fellow comedienne Chelsea Peretti. According to Hughes, Peele’s wife allegedly called her to warn her about working with Key, saying she thought his wife was like Phil Hartman’s. She also detailed several instances of odd behavior, including allegedly pouring alcohol on a sober person’s cake, costing her husband a lot of money through her actions.
Hughes says Key’s wife allegedly offered inconsequential notes to Hughes and her writers. Her contributions included: “the letter K is funny” and “give the audience some candy.” Key’s wife then allegedly threatened to sue the tv network out of frustration of her ideas being ignored, leading to the deal getting killed.
To make matters worse, any attempt to revive the project died when the infamous Hollywood Writers Strike of 2023 happened right before they could finish the pilot.
She mentions that his main gig now is acting in insurance commercials with celebrities who are playing themselves and he’s playing a “guy with a guitar.” Danny McBride plays an insurance agent in a State Farm insurance commercial with Keegan-Michael Key, who holds a guitar.

Did Other People Corroborate Hughes’ Claims?
On X, several people who claim (with no proof, of course) to have worked at Comedy Central or with Key and his wife, backed up Hughes’ story.
“Girl…I worked at CC in the mid to late ‘10s and the wife,” one user posted with a cringe-face emoji. “None of the trainers at the TriBeCa Equinox would work with her. The list goes on & on!”
“Lol, we danced around this topic on a podcast I was on recently…,” another user posted.
“When you search [the] wife the 3rd link is a Reddit page complaining about her not letting him get a word in on the Fly On The Wall Podcast lol,” another user posted.
In a 2024 interview with People Magazine, Key admitted that he and Peele aren’t as close as they once were.
“We don’t see each other that often anymore, which is, to me, a tragedy,” Key said.
In 2026, during an interview with TMZ, Key expressed a desire to make new Key & Peele sketches.
Jordan Peele’s 2017 breakout hit Get Out is about a black man who visits his white girlfriend’s parents for the weekend, uncovering a secret society and dealing with strange and horrific occurrences. Keegan-Michael Key married his wife Elle in 2018, and made their relationship public in January of 2017.
These claims are hearsay, and neither Jordan Peele nor Keegan-Michael Key has responded to Hughes’ claims.
