DJ Quik’s son, David Marvin Blake Jr., was sentenced on Friday, February 27, 2026, to 15 years to life in state prison following his conviction in a 2022 fatal shooting.
In December 2025, Blake Jr. was found guilty of second-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle in connection to the May 25, 2022 killing of 33-year-old Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. in Downey, California. Prosecutors said Blake Jr. fired multiple shots from inside a vehicle during what was described as a “rapidly escalating confrontation” outside the Cardoza family home, fatally wounding the victim.
Although Blake Jr. initially faced a potential sentence of up to 40 years to life, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Laura Walton granted a defense request to strike firearm enhancements that could have added an additional 25 years to his sentence.
During the proceedings, Blake Jr. expressed remorse, stating he was “truly in fear” for his life at the time of the incident and offered an apology to the victim’s family. Judge Walton called the case an “absolute tragedy,” noting that Blake Jr. had no prior criminal record and emphasizing that a “split-second decision” does not define a person’s entire character.
Members of Cardoza’s family voiced dissatisfaction with the outcome. His sister publicly stated she was “not happy” that Blake Jr. “got away with having a gun.”
In a video statement following the sentencing, DJ Quik expressed disappointment that he was not present in court, citing shock over the situation. The veteran producer and rapper said the tragedy has left “two families irrevocably changed forever.”
