Drake has once again come under heavy backlash after appearing to purchase another hip-hop artifact.
Drake Appears to Have Purchased Tupac’s Death Row Chain
Drizzy went viral after he dropped a social media post on August 24. In the post, he appeared to show that he had purchased late rap star Tupac Shakur’s Death Row Chain. In the carousel of photos, Drake posts a picture of Pac holding the Death Row chain. Followed by photos of the newly acquired jewelry, including the engraving on the back of the chain, which reads “All Eyes on YOU 1996,” an apparent nod to the late rapper’s fourth studio album.
Fans went scorched earth on Drake in the comments section of the Instagram post.
“Canadian guy continues acquisition of sacred artifacts for personal culture vulture collection,” one fan wrote.
“Buying just to fit into the culture,” another user said.
“Bro, let it go. It’s been a year already. Even if you buy Tupac’s coffin, nothing will change the L,” another person added.
Tupac became a hot topic during Drake’s 2024 rap feud with Kendrick Lamar. One of the tracks aimed at Kendrick, titled “Taylor Made,” featured A.I.-generated verses from Pac. After the track was released, Tupac’s estate expressed that they were “deeply dismayed” that Drake used an A.I. sample of the late rap star’s voice.
“The Estate is deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorized use of Tupac’s voice and personality,” The late rapper’s estate wrote in a statement. “Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The Estate would never have given its approval for this use.”
They also expressed how they were especially disappointed that the voice was used in retaliation against Kendrick. Who the estate referred to as a “good friend.”
“The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult,” the estate added.
