Another one for the history books! Drake’s iconic single “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne has officially reached Diamond certification in the United States. The RIAA awarded the milestone on October 24th, confirming over 10 million units sold—a massive achievement for a record that helped define an era of Hip-Hop.
Released in late 2011 and produced by T-Minus, “The Motto” served as a standout from Drake’s Take Care album, not only becoming a chart-smashing hit but also embedding itself into popular culture. The track famously popularized the phrase “YOLO” (You Only Live Once), which quickly turned into a global catchphrase across social media, music, and everyday conversation.
For Lil Wayne, this accomplishment adds yet another milestone to his legendary career. “The Motto” becomes his fifth Diamond plaque, joining:
- “Lollipop”
- “Love Me”
- DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One” (with Justin Bieber, Quavo, & Chance The Rapper)
- Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now”
The success also puts attention back on another major record that could reach Diamond status soon: “Forever” by Drake featuring Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Eminem—which is now eligible and trending toward the milestone.
With both artists continuing to make history more than a decade after the song’s release, “The Motto” remains one of the most influential and culture-shifting collaborations of the 2010s.
Shoutout to Drizzy and Tunechi on this massive achievement!
Wayniacs—do you still have “The Motto” in your rotation?
