Experts Believe Drake’s Lawsuit Could Prove to Be ‘Dangerous’

Drake’s has curated a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG). Over Kendrick’s Not Like Us. And several lawmakers have warned that his litigation could prove to be “dangerous.”

“Drake’s defamation claim rests on the assumption that every word of Not Like Us should be taken literally, as a factual representation. This assumption is not just faulty—it is dangerous,” they wrote in a proposed brief.

Several songs were exchanged in the heat of battle. However, Kendrick’s Not Like Us, has been the song that has withstood the test of time. But unfortunately for Drake, the popularity of the song came at the expense of his demise. Several disparaging remarks were made about him in the song. Most notably him being a ped*****e and questions over an inappropriate relationship with actress, Millie Bobbie Brown.

Although the lyrics were meant to be satire, Drake is painting it as slander on Kendrick’s part, admitting it as evidence in the case. Lawmakers believe that Drake’s litigation could start a trend that could lead to “racial bias” and “stereotypes” in the legal process.

“When rap lyrics are admitted [as evidence in a case], it is because they are treated as literal. This, in turn, opens the door to racial bias and stereotypes in the courtroom,” the brief adds.

“As empirical studies have demonstrated. Treating rap lyrics as literal also threatens First Amendment speech protections, and the practice already has created a demonstrable chilling effect across the industry.”

Kendrick is currently on his Grand National tour with fellow TDE artist SZA. That tour is set to hit Drake’s hometown of Toronto, Canada in June. Kendrick has performed the song throughout the tour. But with all the current litigation surrounding the song, it will be interesting to see if he performs Not Like Us, in Drake’s hometown.
