Eminem’s 2002 film 8 Mile is one of the more popular hip-hop films. It chronicles his upbringing as an impoverished young adult growing up in a trailer park in Detroit, Michigan, looking to break out onto the rap scene. It also does a deep dive into the rap star’s tumultuous relationship with his mother.
Eminem Wanted Mariah Carey to Play His Mom in ‘8 Mile’
Eminem’s mother, Kim Basinger is played by actress Stephanie Smith, who also appeared in Batman, L.A. Confidential, and The Getaway. However, the rap star initially wanted Grammy Award winner Mariah Carey to play the role.
Mariah Carey’s former producer Damizza revealed this information during a recent appearance on the TFU Podcast.
“The first thing out of [Eminem’s] mouth is, ‘I want you to play my mother,'” the producer said.
He also noted that Carey’s “insecurities kicked in big time,” after hearing Eminem’s offer.
Damizza also noted that his initial reaction to Eminem’s suggestion was
“I’m not getting in the middle of that. I know how this ends.”
In addition, the producer also noted that Carey declined a meeting with the rap star before even hearing about the movie suggestion. However, it led to the two of them, engaging in a brief romantic relationship.
“It was her chasing him, not him chasing her. Next thing I know, we are at Eminem’s house… and they disappear. The second they went into his room I was like, I’m going back to LA. There is no point in me being here. It went from business to f*****g,” Damizza added.
Carey and Eminem’s relationship did not end well. The rap star took hellacious shots on his 2009 song “The Warning.” However, Carey got the last laugh. Her rebuttal on her 2009 track “Obsessed” won numerous awards, including a Billboard Music Award for Top Pop Song, a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, and a BET Award for Best Female Video.
