Rising Memphis rap star GloRilla found herself at the center of a legal firestorm earlier this week after being charged with felony drug possession, following a break-in at her Georgia residence.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a burglary in progress at GloRilla’s home around 1:30 a.m. on July 20. Reports indicated that three suspects were attempting to steal items from the property before someone inside the home fired shots at them, prompting the intruders to flee the scene. GloRilla—whose real name is Gloria Woods—was not at home during the incident.
While conducting their investigation, authorities discovered a “significant amount of marijuana” in plain view inside the master bedroom closet. The discovery led to additional scrutiny, ultimately resulting in GloRilla being charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a Schedule I controlled substance.
The Grammy-nominated artist voluntarily turned herself in to the Forsyth County Jail on July 22, just two days after the break-in. She was released the same day after posting a $22,260 bond.
In a statement addressing the unusual circumstances, Sheriff Ron Freeman acknowledged the dual nature of the case. “The homeowner is a victim of a serious crime, and we are committed to bringing the suspects to justice,” he said. “At the same time, we must continue to uphold and enforce the law in all aspects of this case.”
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the attempted burglary, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
The incident adds a legal wrinkle to what has otherwise been a major breakout year for GloRilla, who has quickly risen from viral sensation to one of the most prominent young voices in Hip-Hop. Neither GloRilla nor her team has issued an official statement regarding the charges.
