With the NBA trade deadline less than a month away, it appears that some big names could be on the move. One of the stars that could be dealt is the Memphis Grizzlies star, Ja Morant.

Grizzlies Mulling Ja Morant Trade Ahead of Deadline

On Friday (January 9), ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that the organization could be looking to “entertain” offers. That would move their franchise cornerstone ahead of the February 5 deadline.

Charania also noted “multiple teams” are pursuing Morant in trade talks.

In a potential deal, the franchise would “prioritize draft picks and young players in return.”

The news comes at an interesting time. Despite having a record of 17-21, the Grizzlies still hold a comfortable 2.5 game lead over the Dallas Mavericks. For the 10th and final play-in slot in the Western Conference. And after the most recent injury news surrounding Mavs star big man, Anthony Davis, the chances of that slipping away seem more grim than ever.

However, despite still having a chance to play postseason basketball, the Grizzlies could prioritize building a better team for the future.

“Memphis is considering multiple paths forward. Amid the emergence of several promising young players,. Including building around them and 2023 Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr,” Charania added.

However, despite the bombshell report, the Grizzlies are not locked in on trading their franchise player. Should they be unsatisfied with the offers they received for their All-Star guard, they could go the route of keeping him on the roster. As a “focal part of their retool.”

At one point, Morant was one of the NBA’s most promising stars. But this season, he has left a lot to be desired. He is averaging his lowest points per game since his rookie season. And is shooting career lows from the field and beyond the arc. He has also missed five of the last ten games due to injury. Memphis could be prepared to go in another direction.
