Houston came together in a powerful show of love and respect to honor DJ Michael “5000” Watts, the legendary Swisha House co-founder, who was laid to rest on Monday (Feb. 16). The city turned out in force to celebrate the life and legacy of the influential producer and label executive, whose impact helped define Houston’s hip-hop sound.
Watts’ memorial service featured a moving funeral procession, with his body carried through the city by horse and carriage. Hundreds of candy-painted cars—an iconic symbol of Houston’s car culture—joined the procession, while crowds of fans and supporters lined the streets to pay their final respects.
Several prominent Houston rap figures were in attendance, including Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Lil’ Keke, all of whom were part of the Swisha House movement that Watts helped build. His work played a major role in elevating Houston’s presence in hip-hop during the 2000s and beyond.
DJ Michael “5000” Watts passed away on Jan. 30 at the age of 52 due to a rare heart condition. His passing marks the loss of a true pioneer whose influence extended far beyond music, helping shape the culture and identity of Houston hip-hop.
As the city gathered to honor him, the massive turnout reflected the deep respect and lasting legacy Watts leaves behind.
