The rap industry is still buzzing about Jay-Z’s performance at the Roots Picnic last month. Specifically, when it comes to his surprise freestyle, where he took shots at several of his critics.
Ice Cube Weighs in On Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic Freestyle
Hov’s freestyle has sparked major debate. But, if anyone is qualified to give insight on Hov’s warning shot, it is rap artist, Ice Cube. During a recent interview with Bootleg Kev, the No Vaseline creator added his two cents. And said that whenever rap beef is involved, there are always going to be fans that stand on opposite sides of the fence. But asserts that as long as Hov got his point across in the manner that he wanted to, that’s all that matters. And that all of the other outside opinions are just “noise.”
“Whenever one of the greats steps out, people are definitely going to give it an ear, give it a listen, and then it goes to the fans,” he said in a clip caught by Art of Dialogue. Some people love it, some people don’t. But it doesn’t matter; what matters is that he got it off his chest. Say what he wanted to say, needed to say. He had the mic and did it the way he wanted to do it. After that, everything else is just noise.

Many of the fans in the comments section of the post appeared to agree with the former NWA member.
“3 min freestyle >>>> 3 Album gimmick. No one is impressed by streams,” one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I agree! Love it or hate it, but the OG Jay Z said what he said. Old heads understand it, and the young kids don’t have a clue,” a second user chimed in.
It will be interesting to see if Drake responds.
