However, things went left. When Minaj tried to formally ink the rising star to a deal on her music label Heavy on It. But Ice was already signed to two music labels, which made that a nearly impossible task.
Ice Spice Sounds Off on Past “Hiccups” With Nicki Minaj
During a recent appearance on Baby, This is KeKe Palmer, Ice Spice gave her reasoning. She explained that when she was initially approached by Minaj about a potential deal, it just wasn’t the right time.
“I really tried to let our lawyers and managers handle everything. But I was already signed when she was trying to sign me. So I think that’s where the hiccups were, ’cause it was really like no room anymore at that point to make a deal. I’m signed to two labels, so that was already a thing.”
“It’s all love like always. I still look up to her, she’s mother. She’s like family to me,” she added. “I could have expressed my feelings better. But I have immense respect for Nicki and will always appreciate her contributions to my career and the culture.”
Ice Spice’s issues with Minaj went mainstream after one of her former friends, Baby Storme, leaked their text messages. In the leaked messages, the “Munch” artist spoke about a business-related issue that she and Minaj were having, calling her “ungrateful” and “delusional.
In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Ice Spice said that what hurt more than anything was that she was betrayed by a former friend.
“I think that the saddest part of the whole situation is that somebody I knew for so many years and called my friend had me open up and be vulnerable with them, and then took complete advantage of that for her own benefit. So that was the saddest part, really, just feeling used, basically,” she said.
The Bronx-born femcee also added that the leaked text messages depicted a “moment of frustration” that occurred while she was in the middle of contract negotiations.
