A year after his divorce from Teyana Taylor, Iman Shumpert insists he remains unbothered by the lingering negativity.
The former NBA player opened up about their relationship during a recent appearance on the Tap In With TT podcast. Shumpert and Taylor, who tied the knot in 2016, share two daughters: nine-year-old Iman “Junie” and four-year-old Rue Rose.
“We’ve been divorced a year now,” he shared. “We’ve got joint custody of the kids, so I see them when it’s my time, and she sees them when it’s hers. It works—it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
However, the separation hasn’t been without tension. Taylor previously accused Shumpert of leaking sensitive details about the divorce settlement to the media, including the division of assets. The situation escalated further when, during the legal proceedings, she also accused him of being a careless parent. According to TMZ, Taylor expressed serious concerns over the safety and basic care of their children while in his custody.
Despite the accusations, Shumpert maintains a level-headed perspective. He acknowledged that some of Taylor’s court filings were “hurtful,” but said he’s learned to accept public scrutiny, especially since people were just as vocal about the highs of their relationship. Shumpert also emphasized that he refuses to let recent drama tarnish the memories of their “great years together.”
“So it’s like I can’t let this now cause it to be like, now I’m throwing just negative stuff in my mind. No, something happened they discussing it, but that happened a year ago,” he said.
As for the future, Shumpert admits he’s still figuring things out when it comes to love.
“I didn’t realize how young I was when I fell in love,” he said. “Now, I just need to take some time for myself. I’ve got to get me right. A part of me just wanted to be like my dad.”
