India Arie took to social media to hit back at the backlash she has been receiving. After she recently criticized Yung Miami’s hit record, Spend Dat.
India Arie Clarifies Her Stance on Yung Miami’s ‘Spend Dat’
The neo-soul artist appeared to stand in solidarity in a recent protest on Threads. Suggesting a boycott on the song. In a post to her social media account on Wednesday (July 1), Arie clarified her stance. And said that she never called for a boycott of the song. But rather, she was saying the fact that there are people who feel that the song needs to be boycotted shows “where we are as a culture.”
“FOR CLARITY!! I did not say that I think anyone needs to boycott this song. I said it is a sign of where we are as a culture that this song has been accepted so widely. And… THATS FACTS,” she wrote as caught by The Shade Room.
She also said that people should do as they please. But doubled down on her stance. About how the song has been embraced.
“I THINK – people should do whatever they WANT TO DO. You do what you wanna do. I’ll do what I wanna do. And that’s that,” she added. MEANWHILE I also said that the way we are embracing the songs says a lot about where we are as a culture, which … IS JUST FACTS.”
In her initial statement about the record, Irie says that even though some people may just think of the song as just a song, just consuming it can have “influence” on listeners. And said that it is also proof that some people don’t want to be “free.”
At the time of writing, Yung Miami did not respond to Arie’s comments.
