Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is a noted fan of hip-hop. And a photo of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer holding a vinyl of J.Cole’s album, The Fall Off, recently surfaced.
As with most things involving LeBron, the photo quickly went viral on social media. However, many of the comments were negative. Accusing the All-Star forward of being performative. However, Cole recently gave some insight into why James was holding the vinyl.
J. Cole Reveals Backstory Behind Viral LeBron Photo
During a recent appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, the rapper revealed that James was holding the vinyl because of a favor that he had requested.
“That was at the Miami Heat game, and he was bringing his vinyl because I was at the Heat game, and I had asked him if he would meet my kid,” Cole explained while referencing the viral photo (via Kurrco/X).
The rapper went on to explain that his oldest son has developed an interest in basketball. And he is a huge LeBron James fan. So on his way to the arena, LeBron brought a vinyl of Cole’s album with him to have it signed.
“My oldest is getting into basketball, and Bron is his number one, and I hit Bron, and he graciously said he would do it. And on his way, he brought The Fall Off Vinyl so I could sign it,” Cole explained.
He went on to say that Bron helped create an unforgettable moment with his kids. And how that feeling made him appreciative of similar moments he has helped create over the years.
“Bro, that s**t was the craziest feeling like … to see your kids meet a superhero, that was my first time doing some sh** like that,” he added. “And it made me appreciate all the times that there was a father or something that had their kid, and I get to sign an autograph or take a picture, it’s like ‘oh my God.'”
