He and Cam shared a laugh while reminiscing on the story. So there don’t appear to be any hard feelings on Cole’s end.
Eventually, Cole did get his big break. It was through his connection that he met music executive Mark Pitts, who let Jay-Z hear his hit record ” Lights Please. HOV was thoroughly impressed, and in 2009, HOV signed Cole to his music label Roc Nation. Making him the first official artist to be signed.
In a recent sit-down with GQ, Jay-Z addressed Cole’s time with the record label. Specifically, the narrative that their split in 2020 was based on the label not valuing him.
“Jay said that the issue was not that the label didn’t love him. Rather, they believed enough in his vision to allow him to forge his own path.
“An artist’s expression should be their expression. I really fall back. That’s what I think happened with [J.] Cole,” Jay-Z said to the outlet. “The narrative is that we didn’t love Cole. No, we believed in him enough to let him find his journey. It took him a minute, but he found his way.”
It’s been a long journey, but Cole has definitely left his mark on the game.
