Once Jay’s new hairstyle went viral, several fans questioned how he could pull off the look. Which led many to believe that the afro was actually a wig.
Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé shut down all of that wig speculation in a new ad for her haircare line, Cecred. In a short film, narrated by Queen Bey, she explains the process of how she combed out Jay’s wicks and combed them into straight hair, then braided them into cornrows, and ultimately transformed them into the afro that the rap star debuted at the Roots Picnic.
She also explains that Jay-Z initially switched from his signature low-cut dark Caesar to his wicks because of his firstborn daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Because during Blue’s early years, she didn’t like her hair. And Jay grew his out to show his daughter that they both had the same texture of hair.
