Jay-Z fans have been clamoring for new music from him for quite some time. After all, it’s been nearly a decade since the release of his last album, 4:44.
Jay-Z Was ‘Close’ to Being Featured on Clipse’s album
Jay-Z has long been a supporter of Clipse. And when the rap group announced that they were set to drop their first album in nearly two decades, fans were sure he would be featured on the new album. But to many people’s disappointment, he was not. During a recent sit-down with GQ, HOV said that he was “close” to sending them a verse.
“Yeah, I was close. I think the first thing that I say has to be said by me,” he said to the outlet. “I don’t want to be so rigid with it, though. I’m going to keep that open. I’m going to take that back. I don’t want to be so rigid. But at that moment, I was like, “Yeah, I want to do something.” But for me to move forward, I’ve got to get this shit out. I got to get it out.”
During their rollout for Let God Sort Em’ Out, Pusha T confirmed that Clipse sent two songs to the Roc Nation boss to do featured verses for
“He was sent ‘Chains & Whips,’ ‘M.T.B.T.T.F.’, [‘So Be It’],” Pusha T said. “Hov had the album. It was all for him to [do] whatever he wanted to do.”
Despite not having a HOV feature, Clipse’s album still ended up moving 118,000 equivalent album units in its first week and debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. That included 58,000 pure sales and 77.49 million on-demand streams.
