Jaylen Brown is opening up about what he believes happens behind the scenes when NBA players try to use their influence to invest in and uplift their communities.
Brown said many players have “handlers” around them who discourage them from putting money back into their neighborhoods or helping build something comparable to a modern-day Black Wall Street. According to Brown, once players begin pushing for that kind of economic empowerment, negative narratives can start appearing in the media.
He specifically mentioned Colin Cowherd, saying commentary about him became strange as he continued speaking about community building and independence. Brown referenced being described as having a “disease” and being portrayed as someone who always thinks he is “the smartest person in the room.”
Brown says his focus on helping his community is nothing new, noting that he has been speaking about those goals since he was 18 years old.
His comments are now sparking a larger conversation about athlete empowerment, media narratives and how much control professional players truly have over their own influence and resources.
