Jermaine Dupri Spearheading Magic City Documentary at Starz
The “Welcome to Atlanta,” artist, is one of the creators of a five-part docu-series on the historic Atlanta strip club, Magic City that is set to premiere on the STARZ network.
Drake’s production company, Dreamcrew Entertainment, will also be a part of the project.
Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz called the gentleman’s club “one of the most unique places in black culture.”
“Magic City: An American Fantasy is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture,” she said.
“The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to Starz’s slate of adult, culture-driving shows.”
The network already has some connection to the Atlanta landmark. One of their original series, P-Valley dives into the darker side of working in a strip club. In addition, their show BMF, which is based on the rise and fall of the Black Mafia Family drug empire, takes place in 1990s Atlanta, when Magic City was at its peak.
Nelly Gets Honest on Music Mogul
Dupri is probably the best choice for an executive producer the network could have asked for. As the founder of SoSo Def Records, Dupri is considered an Atlanta legend.
During a recent interview, rap star Nelly revealed that JD and Diddy had a Verzuz scheduled at the height of its popularity, but Puff ultimately bowed out.
“Him and Puff was going to do a Verzuz, and Puff was gon’ get murdered. Easy! Easy!” he said on an episode of Drink Champs. “Was not gonna be close. Puff is smart. He didn’t want any part. He knew that. Why do you think he wanted to hold Verzuz in New York? JD could hold Verzuz anywhere. Puff only wanted to hold Verzuz in New York.”
You do realize when you’re talking about JD, you’re talking about going back to Kris Kross, Da Brat… You could lock JD in a room by himself, he will come out with the song. He can perform it, he can make the beat and he can write it. Smash.”
