Jim Jones Reveals That He Passed on Signing Drake, J.Cole & The Weeknd to Record Deals

Videos by According2HipHop

Another day, another viral interview with rap artist Jim Jones. Jones, who has been no stranger to controversial statements over the last several weeks, dropped another one during a recent appearance on the Art of Dialogue podcast.

Jim Jones Makes Shocking Revelation About Drake, J. Cole & The Weeknd

During his appearance on the podcast, Jim Jones said that he had the opportunity to sign three of the biggest stars in the music industry before they blew up. That being Drake, J. Cole, and The Weeknd. But at that point in their careers, he could not visualize them becoming as big as they are today.

“J. Cole used to be in my studio all the time. I can say that wholeheartedly, and then Drake, Alan Grunblatt [Koch VP] let me hear some of his music. But I kept telling him [Grunblatt] he [Drake] had no image. I didn’t understand it, it didn’t connect, but he could rap his ass off,” Jones said during the podcast.

However, Jones also made another interesting point. He questioned whether or not they would have grown to become the global superstars that they are today under his direction. And that his passing on signing them could be the very reason for their success.

“Would it have been nice? Yeah, that might have been dope. But who knows, they might not have had the success that was given to them from the work they put in if it had gone through the channels that I had to offer,” he added.

Drake, J. Cole, and the Weekend have gone on to sell over a combined 340 million records globally. Meanwhile, Jim Jones does not have an artist that even comes close to that level of success.

It is safe to say that the decisions that Cole, The Weeknd, and Drake made for themselves worked out for them in the long haul.
