John Forté, the Grammy-nominated musician best known for his work with Fugees and the Refugee Camp All-Stars, has died at the age of 50.
According to police, Forté was found dead Monday afternoon at his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts. Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin said there were no signs of foul play or any “readily apparent cause of death.” The case is currently under investigation by the state medical examiner’s office.
A native of New York City, Forté was widely regarded as a musical prodigy. He broke through in his early 20s as a key contributor to the Fugees’ Grammy-winning album The Score and later played a major role in Wyclef Jean’s Grammy-nominated solo debut The Carnival.
A versatile multi-instrumentalist and rapper, Forté also carved out a respected solo career, releasing albums such as Poly Sci and I John. His work often featured an eclectic range of collaborators, including Carly Simon, and reflected his reputation as a deeply creative and boundary-pushing artist.
Forté’s passing marks a significant loss for Hip-Hop and music at large, as fans and peers remember his lasting contributions to some of the genre’s most influential projects.
