A Winning Day for MJB
It was a decisive legal victory for Mary J. Blige after a judge dismissed the lawsuit filed against her by former friend and stylist Misa Hylton.
The ruling came after Hylton failed to meet a court deadline to respond to Blige’s motion to dismiss claims that Blige had attempted to poach rapper Vado from her. According to the court, that lack of response effectively ended the case.
Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond stated that Hylton’s failure to oppose the motion “constitutes the abandonment” of her claims. While the judge stopped short of issuing sanctions, her written order made clear that the court was displeased with how the case was handled.
“The court in no way condones parties filing lawsuits claiming millions in damages based on inflammatory accusations, only to have those very same parties abandon their allegations when faced with a motion to dismiss and sanctions,” Judge Perry-Bond wrote. She further warned that this decision could serve as “weighty evidence” if similar litigation tactics are used in the future.
For Blige, the dismissal marks a clean legal win and brings an end—at least for now—to a highly publicized dispute rooted in a once-close personal and professional relationship.
