Authorities have been ordered to return money and property seized from Young Thug during the high-profile YSL RICO case.
On Wednesday (Jan. 7), Judge Paige Reese Whitaker issued a final dismissal of the state’s appeal to retain the rapper’s belongings. As a result, prosecutors must return the items by 5 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 9).
“The Court finds that the plain language of statute requires that Claimants’ property be returned promptly, free of liens and encumbrances,” Judge Whitaker wrote in the ruling. She added that the state failed to cite any authority allowing it to hold the property after both the forfeiture complaint and subsequent appeal were dismissed.
Judge Whitaker had initially ordered the items returned last August after Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, successfully argued that the state missed the legally required 60-day window to hold a civil forfeiture hearing. The prosecution appealed that decision, but the appeal was ultimately rejected.
The property being returned includes $149,427 in cash, assorted jewelry, and multiple vehicles. However, firearms seized during the case will not be returned, as Young Thug is legally prohibited from possessing guns.
The ruling marks another legal victory for the Atlanta rapper as fallout from the YSL case continues to unfold.
