Kid Capri Says He Never Was Paid For Martin Theme Song

In a new interview Kid Capri reiterates that his voice is sampled on the theme song on the hit 1990s sitcom, Martin. He also claims that he was never compensated for the sample of his voice that originated from when he appeared on Def Comedy Jam.

He also says that after years of remaining mum on the subject, he is ready to speak out.

“So they took my voice from Def Comedy Jam, sampled it, put it on the Martin show,” Capri explained. “So they never got no permission from me, never asked for my rights, nothing. This show has been on eight different networks for 30 years. Now if it was a money thing for me, I would been like, ‘Yo where’s my bread?’ I ain’t never did that.”

However, Tisha Campbell, who played Martin’s love interest, Gina, on the show questioned if that was actually Capri’s voice during a promotion for the show’s reunion in 2024. And Martin said it wasn’t true. So that made Capri want to tell his side of the story.

“First of all, that was the dumbest s—t to say, everybody knows it’s me,” Capri continued. “Number two, I got videos of this. Number three, all you had to say was, ‘Yo Kid, we used your s—t, is it right? Here’s a bag.’ Or not.”

Martin was a breath of fresh air as far as 1990s sitcoms were concerned. And the program quickly took the airwaves by storm. With the show’s success came increased popularity. Which led to celebrity appearances on the program. Guests included M.C. Hammer, Notorious B.I.G., and the United States Women’s Olympic Basketball Team. Even to this day artists such as Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Fabolous have made references to the show in their music.
